Are you seeking a fast-track management career with a significant engineering and/or technological focus? The MBA/Master of Science (MS) in Engineering Dual-Degree Program is the answer, with full-time and part-time options available to suit your needs.
Offered by the University of Pittsburgh Katz Graduate School of Business and Swanson School of Engineering, the program enables students with an undergraduate degree in engineering or the hard sciences to pursue management roles in organizations with an engineering and/or technological focus.
Solving problems in today's complex and dynamic global business environment requires more than just technical savvy or business acumen. Hence, manufacturing and service companies value graduates with both management and technical skills.
Requirements
The Katz Graduate School of Business and certain departments in the Swanson School of Engineering offer a dual MBA/MS program with the following requirements. Please note the courses outlined below are only for the MBA portion—please see the Swanson School of Engineering programs page and view the options under Dual Programs to find the MBA/MS programs and information about courses and requirements for specific engineering departments.
- 39 of the total 48 required credits for an MBA degree include a) 27 credits of MBA core courses, b) 3 credits for the MBA professional and technical development program, c) 7.5 credits of electives, and d) 1.5 credits for the interdisciplinary project course.
- An additional 9 credits from the student's MS in Engineering program will be carefully chosen by the student's MBA and MS advisors to complement his/her educational and professional objectives and will count toward completion of the MBA degree.
- 25.5 credits of graduate-level coursework are required in engineering.
The required coursework may include an industry project carried out under the joint supervision of business and engineering faculty that enables the student to apply the skills learned in the classroom to a real-life situation. For full-time students, the project will, as far as possible, take the form of a summer internship with a company (in the summer after completion of the first year in the program). This project will be worth three credits, 1.5 each toward the MBA and MS Engineering degree requirements.
The full-time option can be completed in two academic years, whereas the part-time option may typically require a period of four to five years.
